Eva Magill-Oliver

Posted by Kate Singleton on

Eva Magill-Oliver is an American artist and new mom who recently moved back home to the States after three years in Paris. Eva's mixed-media pieces are uniquely her own in style - dreamy, lush and thoughtful.

Where are you from originally and where do you live now?

I was born and grew up on the coast of South Carolina. I went to school in Athens, Georgia and subsequently moved to Atlanta where I lived and worked until 2007. I then moved to France with my fiancé, where we lived just outside of Paris for three years before returning to the United States in 2010.

What is your background as an artist?

I started private drawing and watercolor classes when I was really young and continued throughout high school. I received a BFA in drawing and painting from the University of Georgia. After school, I got a job with a fine arts publishing company in Atlanta as an in house artist and at the same time continued to work on my personal art.

Are your landscapes inspired by actual places?

When I first started the landscapes they were mainly inspired by the Bois de Boulogne, one of two large parks in Paris that my husband and I were lucky enough to live next to. Since being back here, they've evolved and now I find a lot of inspiration from where I grew up near the ocean as well as the rural countryside of Georgia.

Your work is full of beautiful but unexpected color. Where do these palettes originate?

My color palette is mainly influenced by the seasons and my current environment. Paris was often gray and cool and my work reflected that. These pieces have a lot of midsummer color, warmth and vibrancy in them. I like to change up the color themes in my work a lot but I always seem to be drawn to having strong contrast and keeping the image open and clean.

What do you do when not painting?

My main job at the moment is taking care of my six month old son. I also love to run and do so whenever I get a chance. Other than that, I enjoy knitting as well as reading. Gardening is a passion of mine as well. My job just before the baby was born was at a florist and garden shop. It was heaven being around so many beautiful plants and flowers everyday!

Do you have a personal stance on making art and/or living a creative life?

I have been lucky to have always had jobs that were art related and allowed me to make a living while at the same time giving me the opportunity to create and nurture my personal work. Ever since I can remember I've been either creating, learning or researching art and I truly can't image a life not doing so. You have to stay true to who you are regardless of jobs, time or family.
